Our school is among the most diverse on Cape Cod which creates a remarkable learning environment for our students. Many of our children and families are from countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean especially Jamaica.  Our school community also includes children who descended from other generations of immigrants, LGBTQ families and newcomers seeking refuge from COVID in urban areas.   
Given the context of intense social turbulence brought about by civil unrest and constant churning by the media, we need to mitigate the impact racism has on the lives of our students and our community.  Anti-racism is defined as an active and conscious effort to work against multi-dimensional aspects of racism as distinguished from being an ally.  Together with the School Committee, we have named our own efforts to become an anti-racist school that continues to celebrate diversity and inclusion.  ....

How teachers remember their own childhoods affects how they challenge school inequities


Teachers, like many of us, remember moments of achievement, schoolyard games and making mistakes as children. Often teachers draw on childhood memories to explain why they wanted to enter their profession. Teachers may hold memories of being inspired by a former teacher or resolve to do better than a teacher they experienced as unfair or belittling.
Childhood memories chronicle more than old scenes of school. Memory is a creative process that teachers can use to interpret the past and imagine the future of their work. Even more, how teachers remember childhood informs their commitments to challenge inequities in education, including systemic racism, classism and ableism. ....
