Though the Bunker Hill Monument was built to memorialize a Revolutionary War battle, its museum had held guestbooks from the Civil War era with signatures of many notable people. Now they are being returned.Pat Greenhouse/Globe Staff
Guestbooks signed by Mary Todd Lincoln and 42,000 other Civil War-era visitors to the Bunker Hill Monument will be returning to Charlestown after their purchase at auction Wednesday by an unidentified philanthropist for $17,000.
The three guestbooks emerged at auction in Connecticut to the surprise and concern of Charlestown historians, who had been unaware that they no longer were in the possession of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, which was founded in 1823 and built the 221-foot obelisk at the site of the famous Revolutionary War battle. ....

Mary Todd Lincoln, the president’s wife, signed the guestbook during the Civil War. So did Dr. Mary Walker, a Union physician who was the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor. George Arth, a Marine Corps bass player who was in the orchestra at Ford’s Theater the night President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, also signed. ....
