All Eyes On North Carolina: The Week In Review From WFAE

NPR
A week after the shooting death of Andrew Brown Jr., protesters continue to march in the streets of Elizabeth City, shouting, “Release the tape - the WHOLE tape!”
This week began with all eyes locked on North Carolina as the fatal shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. by Pasquotank County deputies became the latest flash point in a seemingly endless stream of news and outrage over the deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police.
A lawyer for the family, who viewed a 20-second snippet of body camera video on Monday, called the fatal shooting during an arrest an execution. An independent autopsy showed Brown was shot five times, including in the back of the head, and the FBI began a civil rights probe into the case. The local prosecutor said deputies were hit by the car Brown was driving as the shooting unfolded, and a Superior Court judge denied requests to immediately release body camera footage to the public, saying he thought it could hinder the investigation ....

Charlotte's New ASC President Talks About Where The Organization Is Headed

/
Krista Terrell has been named president of the ASC and was lead editor on the Cultural Equity Report.
Charlotte’s Arts & Science Council is working to support more culturally diverse and grassroots organizations. The effort follows its first Cultural Equity Report released in February admitting that organizations of color received small amounts of funding compared to larger organizations, such as the Mint Museum. In that report, ASC issued an apology for that inequity.
Krista Terrell is the organization s new president. She is a Black PR executive who has been with ASC for 19 years. She steps into the role after Charlotte City Council members reduced ASC’s funding from last year’s $3.2 million to $800,000. Arts funding overall was increased but now the Foundation For The Carolinas will distribute the money ASC would normally receive. Terrell says she’s puzzled by the city’s action. ....

It highlighted eight white, Western Eurocentric organizations that have received the most money from ASC since its founding in 1958

ASC Apologizes For Past Inequities In Funding Arts Groups And Artists

Charlotte s Arts & Science Council has released its first cultural equity report.
Charlotte s Arts & Science Council is apologizing for past policies that it says have excluded people and communities of color from mainstream arts and cultural funding. In its first Cultural Equity Report, the organization details those inequities and outlines changes it has made in an effort to shift from what has been culture for some to its goal of Culture for All.
The ASC grew out of the Charlotte Arts Fund, which was founded in 1958 to fund eight organizations, including the symphony, the Mint Museum, what s now Discovery Place Nature, and other music and theater groups. The ASC took its current form in 1975. At one time, the ASC s board members were mostly white and lived in just two ZIP codes, according to the report out Tuesday. ....
