FINAL GRADUATION FOR BLAIRSVILLE, SALTSBURG HIGH SCHOOLS TONIGHT

Tonight will be the final graduation ceremonies for both the Blairsville and Saltsburg High Schools.
Both schools’ ceremonies are expected to be filled with emotion, according to District Superintendent Philip Martel, not only for the great accomplishments for the students, but also it being the last commencements for both schools.
The graduation ceremonies come a few days after a federal court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Save Our Saltsburg Schools meant to stop the reorganization process, which would close the Saltsburg Middle-High School, bus all Saltsburg Middle-High school students to Blairsville, and reopen the Saltsburg Middle-High School as a STEAM academy for the district. The group claims that the reconfiguration would be detrimental to the students education, and cause hardships for the Saltsburg community. ....

Covid-19 continues to crop in Indiana County’s schools. Indiana Area announced yesterday that a student and an employee at Horace Mann Elementary have both tested positive and both were in school during their infectious period. That being the case, five additional staff and/or students will quarantine.
Also, a student at the Junior High tested positive and was also in school during the infectious period, and nineteen additional staff and/or students will quarantine as a result.
Those four active cases and another active case at East Pike Elementary bring the total to five for the district, which is staying open under its current educational model. ....

At Tuesday night’s Blairsville-Saltsburg School Board meeting, discussion continued on the closure of the Saltsburg School District, including what the next steps are going to be in the process, and an amendment o the resolution passed last Thursday night.
During his presentation, superintendent Philip Martel showed that one of the biggest advantages to the district reconfiguration plan was the eventual savings from early retirement incentives. Martel said that about $7.1 million would be saved in five years time and about $10.6 million in savings in nine years.
During the meeting, the board approved by a 6-3 vote a resolution that makes a change to the resolution detailing the permanent closure of Saltsburg Middle-High School. The change was to have the final day of operations at the school be June 30th. Not only does tha ....

The Blairsville-Saltsburg School Board will hold a committee meeting tonight, on the eve of tomorrow night’s special meeting at which the board will vote on whether or not to permanently close the Saltsburg Middle-High School.
Tonight’s meeting does not have a published agenda, but tomorrow night’s does. It calls for citizen remarks on the motion to close the school, then consideration of the motion and a vote.
The motion itself is quite simple; it notes that the required public hearings were held on the matter on January 13
th and 14
th, that the 90-day moratorium on a final vote has now passed, and that the board wishes to render its decision. The administration is then directed to take any and all actions to notify the state Department of Education and to do whatever is necessary to affect the closure. ....

The Blairsville-Saltsburg School Board has scheduled a special meeting for this Thursday evening to consider and vote on the permanent closure of the Saltsburg Middle-High School. The meeting will be held virtually and the link for the public to view and participate will posted to the district website, www.b-ssd.org, after noon that day.
The action comes after the school district held a virtual public hearing in January, followed by a mandatory 90-day cooling-off period. The meeting on Thursday will be at 6:00.
