Agencies
According to CoWIN data, 7,324,352 doses were administered in the 18-44 age group between May 16 and May 25 compared to 6,108,696 in the 45-plus category.
States were holding additional stocks of 17.75 million vaccine doses as per updates available with the Centre on Wednesday. Of these, six states – Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh – had at least a million-plus doses in their respective stocks.

covid-19 crisis: States start prioritising second shot for 45+, first jab slots being rescheduled

Synopsis
Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh are among the states which have rescheduled appointments for the first time vaccine beneficiaries. This exercise first entails calculating how many second doses are due in each district and then allocating the vaccines.

Some states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala have increased the second dose share to 80% or more given the large numbers involved. Some have stopped walk-in appointments for the 45-plus age group.
Most states have started to cancel and reschedule appointments for the first vaccination dose this week so as to prioritise those due for the second jab in 45-plus age group. This is in line with the Centre’s protocol that 70% of its vaccine supplies must be used for completing the second dose.

Rural, tribal regions fare better in COVID-19 vaccination drive

“We have had better percentages in tribal districts than urban areas,” Chhattisgarh health minister T S Singh Deo told ET. “The highest vaccination targets have been met in LWE-affected Sukma at 86%. Even Bastar has recorded vaccination higher than the state average at 60-65%. This is better than our urban centres like Raipur and Bilaspur.”
All states have reported a similar trend, which is contrary to the perception that rural districts would have lower vaccination due to connectivity and accessibility issues.
“The vaccination percentages are much higher in rural and tribal-dominated districts at 80% as compared to urban districts at an average of 50%,” Madhya Pradesh National Health Mission director Chhavi Bharadwaj said. “The reason is a certain degree of scepticism due to information flow in urban centres. People have raised safety concerns and have been apprehensive about the new vaccines. But in rural areas there is in general better vaccination uptake.”
