A Norwegian poultry producer, working with a leading local feed company, has moved to exclude Brazilian soy from its supply chain, relying on a new soy-free feed formulation for its annual broiler production which covers 650,000 birds.
The chicken producer, Gårdsand, said the motivation behind this development is its increasing concern about being associated with soy from Brazil, which is claims is linked to deforestation.
“We find the risk of including this commodity in our supply chain to be so high that we’ve excluded soy entirely, and shifted to other protein sources,” said May Iren Varlid Aarvold, marketing lead, Gårdsand. ....

Suppliers to salmon industry lead the way to end deforestation in Brazil

The Brazilian soy suppliers to the salmon industry, CJ Selecta, Caramuru and Imcopa, will implement a 100 percent deforestation free soybean value chain with 2020 as their cut-off date. No soy grown on land deforested after this deadline will be traded.
This is a bold and historic move that sets a new benchmark for global sustainable supply chains. As a result, the majority of the global farmed salmon industry, including the entire European salmon sector, will source soy from Brazilian suppliers whose soybean value chains are 100 percent deforestation free.
CJ Selecta, Caramuru and Imcopa/Cervejaria Petrópolis have set August 2020 as the cut-off-date for their deforestation free soybean supply chain. Together with the sustainability standard owner ProTerra and WWF Brazil, the soy suppliers have agreed on a robust monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system to implement and enforce their commitment to zero deforestation. ....

SAO PAULO, Feb 3 (Reuters) - A Brazilian appeals court on Wednesday could clear up a legal hurdle delaying Bunge’s plans to take over two soy processing plants following a deal in May with crusher Imcopa.
Wednesday’s hearing will focus on two Panama-registered firms that claim, as indirect creditors of Imcopa, which is in bankruptcy protection, to have rights to some of the proceeds from the sale, according to court filings seen by Reuters.
The three-judge panel is expected to rule on whether the Panamanian firms Minefer Development SA and Triana Business SA are legitimate participants in the process. ....

Three Brazilian salmon-feed supply growers CJ Selecta, Caramuru and Imcopa/Cervejaria Petrópolis will produce and harvest only deforestation- and conversion-free soybean supply chain products.
The change is a result of the first large-scale, protein-producing sector that’s eliminated links to tropical deforestation throughout the supply chain.
Under the international agreement, no soybean crops produced on land converted after August 2020 will be allowed into supply chains, and the new standards will apply to future purchase contracts.
The European salmon industry’s Brazilian soy product supply chain for feed is set to become deforestation-free. According to the Rainforest Foundation Norway, Brazilian salmon-feed supply growers CJ Selecta, Caramuru and Imcopa/Cervejaria Petrópolis say anything they produce and harvest post-August 2020 must ....

The soy suppliers - CJ Selecta, Caramuru and Imcopa/Cervejaria Petrópoli - together with the sustainability standard owner, ProTerra, and WWF Brazil, have agreed on a robust monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system to implement and enforce their commitment to zero deforestation.
Their decision will have immediate effect for all new contracts of soy purchased.
The commitment by those Brazilian suppliers was hailed by global environmental organizations, international retailers, salmon farmers, feed companies, salmon processors and investors, all who cited concern about the increasing deforestation and conversion rates in Brazil. ....
