In total, $30,000 will be distributed to several local schools and organizations across the Wabash Valley. The money comes from the United Way's 'Youth Success Impact Council.' The aim is to help keep students active and involved in school. The grants help those in kindergarten through 12th grade who struggle with attendance or staying engaged in class.
STREATOR – Local school districts in Streator will be gifted furry friends from Streator Area United Way. It’s all a part of the community organization’s new Therapy Dog Program. Executive Director Elizabeth Palm says the board of directors voted to put the program into works earlier this year after attaining extra campaign dollars. The therapy dog program offered to Woodland and Streator schools includes the cost of the pup, training, and veterinary care. Palm says the benefits of a therapy dog go beyond just the physical, emotional, and mental health benefits.
Campbell Police has added a four-legged officer to its team, but not for the reason you might think. K9 Ainsley will be the department's very first therapy dog. Ainsley is an 8-week old Bernedoodle. She joined the department on December 10 and was partnered with one of the department's records specialists. She is currently being trained to help both victims and officers, and act as an ambassador for the department. "We're going to want to make sure that she's able to be out there in the community," said Campbell Police Capt. Ian White. "children, victims, witnesses. She's going to have to be able to have the right mannerisms for that, be the right demeanor type of dog."
