Man gets 35 years in appealed 1999 kidnapping case


ELKTON — In December 2004, Pennsylvania State Police Det. John J. Comerford swore out an arrest warrant charging former Port Deposit-area resident Joseph Dwayne Griest with first-degree rape and related sexual assault offenses in that state.
Comerford did so even though Griest, who was 33 at that time, already was serving a 65-year prison sentence in Maryland in a related 1999 kidnapping case that had been handled in Cecil County.
His decision to secure that Pennsylvania arrest warrant more than 16 years ago loomed large on March 16.
That’s when Griest, now 49, received a 35-year prison term after pleading guilty to kidnapping and carjacking in his latest successful appeal of that dual-jurisdiction case relating to a 1999 abduction that started in Elkton and ended several hours later in Pennsylvania. ....

Elkton man charged in SUV theft, arson


ELKTON - Fire detectives have arrested a man accused of stealing a sport utility vehicle in an Elkton neighborhood in March and setting it ablaze in a wooded area a short distance away later that day, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The suspect - Austin William Hitchcock, 22 - allegedly stole a 1999 Jeep Cherokee at approximately 5:30 a.m. on March 24 in front of a residence in the 100 block of Hollingsworth Manor while - one block away - MOSFM detectives were conducting an on-scene investigation after someone deliberately set fire to a vacant house, destroying it, earlier that morning, fire officials reported. ....

Woman charged with attempted murder in Elkton shooting


ELKTON — A woman is facing an attempted murder charge after she allegedly opened fire on a man at their Elkton residence on Tuesday night – wounding him in the leg after one of the bullets narrowly missed his head, according to Cecil County District Court records.
Investigators identified the suspect as Ishina T. Robinson-McCoy, 30, of the unit block of Huntsman Drive.
Police said the only people at the residence when the incident occurred were Robinson-McCoy, the man who suffered the gunshot wound to his leg and a second woman.
The second woman told investigators that she was at that residence “to participate in a threesome” and that, throughout the evening, Robinson-McCoy grew “increasingly upset and began to physically attack” the man – hitting him with her hands and a stroller, police added. ....

Police: Suspect desecrated Rising Sun grave on Easter Sunday


RISING SUN — A man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly desecrated the grave of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in a Rising Sun cemetery on Easter Sunday because he had been jilted, according to Cecil County District Court records.
During a police interview after his arrest, the suspect — Dwayne Earl Young, 60, of York, Pa. — admitted to knocking over stone grave markers, shattering vases and pulling flowers from the ground at that burial site in Brookview Cemetery, police said.
Young told the investigator that he desecrated the grave because he “lost his cool” after learning that his girlfriend, with whom he had a relationship for the past 10 years, purportedly had been unfaithful to him with his “best friend,” police added. ....
