An Upper Peninsula Lutheran minister recently linked Christian and Indigenous theology, gray wolves and COVID-19 in an article for Earthbeat, a climate change reporting initiative for the National Catholic Reporter.
Jon Magnuson, is the director of the Cedar Tree Institute in Marquette, Michigan, a non-profit organization that runs seminars and workshops related to mental health, religion and the environment. The institute also provides counseling, mediation and consulting.
Magnuson, with masters degrees in divinity and social work, has taught classes at Northern Michigan University, Oregon State University, Seattle Pacific University and the University of Washington. He writes about spirituality, cross-cultural conflict and psychology. ....

Tai Chi in the park Wednesdays | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE Each Wednesday evening from 5:30-6 p.m., people are invited to join a free, informal gathering of both young and old to engage in a practice of Tai Chi.
This series is scheduled to continue though February. Weather will not prevent any of the gatherings, organizers said.
Tai Chi is mind/body gentle exercise that builds resilience, balance, and flexibility. It also contributes to maintaining a strong immune system. Dress appropriately. West end of Mattson Park, near the historic Fire Bell. Watch for the lantern. A hot cup of tea awaits participants.
During these times of COVID, the weekly gathering is a gift from the Cedar Tree Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides services and initiates projects in the areas of mental health, religion, and the environment, organizers said. ....

Stopping by a roadside antique shop in a small Upper Peninsula hamlet a year ago last January, shortly before the beginning of the pandemic, I spent time looking over a rusty link of chain attached to a set of steel jaws hanging from a ceiling post. A tag read, Wolf Trap: $50. My wife looked at it, then remarked, I don t really want this in our home. We moved on to the secondhand glass and dish displays.
The dilapidated steel trap was a relic from the past. It also carried a warning of what might be coming. In Michigan, legal protection of gray wolves has been part of our political landscape for close to 50 years. The U.S. Endangered Species Act, originally passed in 1973, initially provided federal protection. Under that legislation, any trapping of wolves in the Great Lakes Basin was forbidden. ....
