The City of Sitka released updated COVID mitigation guidance today that includes new guidelines for travel and testing, and gives specific recommendations for fully-vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals (City of Sitka)

shared with KCAW this morning, which included the number of breakthrough cases counted over the last three days.
Over the last two days, Sitka reported 64 coronavirus cases (7/22-7/23).
Many of the new cases are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, and all were experiencing symptoms when they received testing, according to the city’s COVID dashboard. 4 of the new cases are “non-residents.” Contact tracing is still in progress for most of the cases, so it’s still unclear where most of the cases contracted the virus. ....

Twenty-three more Sitkans tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday (7-19-21) bringing Sitka’s total active case count to 175, with one new hospitalization.
According to city data, all twenty-three patients are Sitka residents, and were experiencing symptoms at the time of testing. Patients range in age from a child under 10 to two residents in their 70s. Nearly half of yesterday’s positive cases consisted of people in their 20s and 30s.
One case was classified as “community spread,” meaning public health officials haven’t been able to determine who the patient contracted the virus from. Transmission details remain unreported for the other twenty-two cases, and contact tracing is still in progress. for all twenty-three cases. ....

Sitka's surge continues with 43 new cases reported over weekend

Sitka health officials reported 43 new coronavirus cases over the weekend and five more hospitalizations.
According to information published to the city’s COVID dashboard on Saturday and Sunday (7-18-21), 42 of the new patients are Sitka residents ranging in age from young children to several patients in their 80s. Nearly half of the patients are in their 20s and 30s. Nine of the patients are children under 10.
Most of them were experiencing symptoms when they received testing. Fifteen cases are “secondary” meaning they had known contact with another COVID positive patient. Several cases are tied to community spread, and two are travel related. Contact tracing is still in progress for the remainder of the cases. ....

Some downtown Sitka businesses have begun requiring masks again, and others are reducing capacity and updating policies in response to the recent surge in coronavirus cases. (KCAW/Rose)
The Sitka Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is now recommending masking and social distancing for Sitkans, regardless of coronavirus vaccination status.
When the EOC met on Wednesday (7-14-21), both Fire Chief Craig Warren and Public Health Nurse Denise Ewing emphasized that all Sitkans should follow the recommendations, at least until the recent surge in Sitka tapers off.
While health officials continue to report the vaccine’s high efficacy, even against the more transmissible delta variant of the COVID virus, around 30 % of the coronavirus cases reported last week in Sitka were breakthrough [18 out of 60 reported], meaning the patients contracted the virus even after being fully ....

“Really what’s going on here is an issue of people ending up in the hospital who are unvaccinated,” Dr. Elliot Bruhl told the Sitka Assembly on July 13. He went on to add that the growth in cases “has really been centered in three clusters, or groups, of people who have chosen not to get vaccinated and also chosen to associate closely with one another.” Nevertheless, both Bruhl and Sitka Incident Commander Craig Warren advised a return to masking in public areas until the outbreak cools.
