Brad King: Planning around Muncie's historic preservation challenges

Performing and planning preservation efforts also provides challenges. In the past, the focus has been on the preservation of individual properties which has led to “checkerboard” results. A house in this block, a property in that neighborhood, doesn’t provide the streetscape with complete historic beautification.
The alternative to “checkerboard-ing” is corridor restoration. The real estate mantra is “location, location, location.” Why should historic preservation ignore that sentiment? Corridor preservation restores connecting thoroughfares between interest points like business hubs or downtown to campus. While more costly although potentially offset by economies of scale this would create a much larger ripple in the local economy and property values. ....

Avian report: I feel a wonderful vote of confidence that a bird has built a nest in my lilac bush. Unfortunately, it’s too high up to see the eggs. I will look for the initial flights.
