Hosted by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, “Policing, Performance and the Question of Reform,” will feature a discussion between artist Shaun Leonardo and UH Chief of Police Caeser Moore and moderated by Janice Bond, deputy director of the Contemporary Art Museum Houston.
University of Houston Chief of Police Ceaser Moore will join interdisciplinary artist Shaun Leonardo to discuss the perception and practice of policing and how art, dialogue and engagement can impact its future.

"Your First Interaction With Law Enforcement" Opens at UH

In the aftermath of Derek Chauvin s conviction for murdering Houstonian George Floyd, the subject of what it means to interact with the cops has never been timelier. Enter Brooklyn artist Shaun Leonardo, who will be presenting a piece called “Your First Interaction With Police” at the University of Houston main campus. The work is a constantly evolving dialogue about how people from all walks of life experience meeting with cops.
“To portray and feel deeply a fuller self that is not contained within these projections or these stereotypes that has been my mandate. That has been the very thing I want to offer to the world,” Leonardo said in a statement. “I wanted to pull more and more people into that exploration so it would not be contained [solely] to my own narrative.” ....

Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts will present an Artist’s Talk by Marisa Morán Jahn & Panel Conversation with Rafi Segal, June Barrett, and Laurie Simmons, moderated by Karen Farber.
In this artist’s presentation, artist Marisa Morán Jahn shares her decade-long work with caregivers producing creative media, public art, and now architectural and urban-scale projects. Jahn and architect Rafi Segal will present their collaboration on Carehaus, the United States’ first care-based co-housing project and its related exhibition on view at the Blaffer Museum of Art. ....
