Carbon levy on EU imports needed to raise global climate ambition

All imported products under the EU Emissions Trading System should be covered
It should constitute an alternative to existing measures on carbon leakage
To raise global climate ambition and prevent ‘carbon leakage’, the EU must place a carbon price on imports from less climate-ambitious countries, say Environment MEPs.
On Friday, the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety adopted a resolution on a WTO-compatible EU carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) with 58 votes for, 8 against and 10 abstentions.
The resolution underlines that the EU’s increased ambition on climate change must not lead to ‘carbon leakage’ as global climate efforts will not benefit if EU production is just moved to non-EU countries that have less ambitious emissions rules. ....

Company eyes 20 MTPA by FY22
The Ramco Cements Ltd., the flagship company of the Ramco Group, is planning to expand its production capacity to 20 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by FY22, a top official.
“Currently, we have a production capacity of over 16 MTPA and this will increase to 20 MTPA with the completion of the third line of clinkering plant at Jayanthipuram in Andhra Pradesh and a new cement plant in Kurnool,” said S. Vaithiyanathan, CFO.
As per the earlier plan, Ramco Cements decided to expand clinkering capacity at Jayanthipuram from 3 MTPA to 4.5 MTPA before March 2021, set up a plant in Kurnool with a clinkering capacity of 2.25 MTPA and cement capacity of 1 MTPA, a thermal power plant and waste heat recovery plant (WHRP) before March 2021. ....

New Delhi: Cement makers volume growth is set to hit a decadal high of 13 per cent next fiscal, Crisil Ratings said on Thursday.
Accordingly, the growth trend will be backed by expected revival in demand from the infrastructure and urban housing sectors, and a generous low-base effect.

The agency in an analysis of 15 Crisil-rated cement companies cited that increased volume will counterweigh the impact of rising power and fuel costs on cash accruals, and will also keep the credit outlook of cement makers stable. ....
