SAN LUIS RESERVOIR: On March 2017 (top) at 98 percent of total capacity, and 110 percent of historical average for this date and in 2021 (bottom) 58% full, or 68% of its historical average.CA Dept. of Water Resources
California's reservoirs are half empty.
The massive bodies of water that the state depends on for agriculture and everyday use in homes are dropping dramatically.
Case in point: Lake Shasta, the state's largest water reserve, is at 53% of capacity as of April 3. On the same date last year, it was at 80% of capacity.
While last winter was marked by parched conditions similar to this year, reservoirs were still full in spring 2020, as the state was coming off a run of wet rainy seasons. But at the end of a second consecutive dry winter, the reservoirs are starting to show signs of drought conditions.

British court rules against Sierra Leone in SL Mining jurisdiction case

By Reuters Staff
2 Min Read
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Britain’s High Court on Monday dismissed Sierra Leone’s challenge of a 2020 International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) decision over claims by SL Mining after a dispute over its iron ore mining operations in the country.
The miner, a subsidiary of U.S. commodity trader Gerald Group, filed for arbitration with the ICC in August 2019 and suspended its Marampa mine the following month.
Later that year, Sierra Leone cancelled the company’s mining licence, saying it had breached its contractual obligations. SL Mining denied the accusation.
Sierra Leone then challenged the ICC’s jurisdiction, arguing SL Mining should have waited three months from the July 14, 2019 notice of dispute before commencing arbitration proceedings.

In this Feb. 2021, photo released by California Department of Fish and Wildlife shows a gray wolf (OR-93), seen near Yosemite, Calif., shared by the state's Department of Fish and Wildlife. The young male wolf has been traveling near Yosemite National Park, the farthest south a wolf has been tracked in California in more than a century. Researchers have been monitoring OR-93 via his tracking collar and said the animal departed Oregon earlier this year, likely in search of a new territory. Little snow and little rain mean drought - dry and difficult months lie ahead for California

Little snow and rain mean drought - fire danger, calls for water conservation in California

California’s wet season is coming to a close without a much-sought “March miracle” storm, setting the stage for a painful escalation of drought in the coming months.
The April 1 snow survey, which measures the peak accumulation of snow in the Sierra and southern Cascades just before it melts, will show only about 60% of average snowpack. California relies on this snow to fill its rivers and streams, to help keep forests and grasslands from burning catastrophically, and to provide up to a third of the state’s water.

Along Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay, the swath of blooming yellow mustard across the coastal hills turned into a gold mine for Iacopi Farms.
“A lot of people were trespassing to see them, so we just opened the gates and charged $10 per person,” said Deborah Iacopi. “With COVID, a lot of people are going stir crazy and want to get out and see something pretty.”
