8 deaths; 40 new COVID cases reported Monday

SCIOTO The Portsmouth City and Scioto County Health Departments reported eight additional deaths during the past two weeks in connection with the COVID-19 virus.
The victims are two 61-year old men who both died on the 15, a 78-year old woman who died on the 16, a 102-year old woman who died on the 22, a 61-year old man who died on the 23, an 89-year old woman who died on the 23, a 66-year old woman who died on the 26 and a 71-year old man who died on the 27.
The deaths bring the total to 52 Scioto County residents that have passed away in connection with the virus. COVID-19 was a contributing factor in their deaths, however, it does not preclude the existence of co-morbidities that may or may not have also contributed to their death. ....

SCIOTO Rates of influenza-associated hospitalizations are down significantly throughout Ohio and the United States, which public health experts say is due to a multitude of reasons.
A few weeks into the 2020-2021 flu season, the Ohio Department of Health has reported 43 hospitalizations as of Dec. 12. Compared to other years, this 10th week of reporting is just under 10 times less than last flu season’s and five times less than this point in 2018-2019. ....

PORTSMOUTH The first steps were taken in Portsmouth to halt the spread of the coronavirus Monday afternoon following the vaccination of two city Health Department nurses.
Slightly after 2 p.m. at the PCHD building, Public health nurse Mandy Whisman administred the first COVID vaccine to Director of Nursing Christine Thomas in front of members of the local media. The two soon after switched roles, Thomas administering to Whisman. ....

SCIOTO Scioto County is expected to receive its first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines as early as Monday Dec. 21. Local health, education, and emergency management agencies are ready to activate coordinated vaccination plans that follow Ohio Department of Health guidelines.
The first supply of vaccines will be limited to frontline medical and public health workers and emergency medical responders.
“We need to first protect those who are providing frontline care for our growing number of positive cases,” said Dr. Jerod Walker, Scioto County Health Commissioner. “Vaccines are on the way and will be administered as quickly as possible.” ....

SCIOTO A flicker of light can perhaps be seen at the end of a months-long tunnel in the county’s battle against the coronavirus.
The virus, which has taken the lives of 39 Scioto residents and caused economic and mental health distress, has possibly met its match with the arrival of vaccines starting next week. According to a release from the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency on Friday, that day could come as early as Monday, Dec. 21.
Portsmouth City Health Commissioner Chris Smith, returning from military service, filled-in Portsmouth City Council on the latest of getting the vaccines to the area. ....
