State Hospital West (SHW) opened on May 10, eight months after the new Syringa Chalet Skilled Nursing Facility opened at State Hospital South (SHS) in Blackfoot. While Syringa is for seniors requiring both geriatric nursing and mental health care, SHW is dedicated to treating mental health problems of adolescents aged 12 through 17. The new facility will replace the former 20-bed unit for adolescents that was located at SHS. The relocation of the state's adolescent mental health unit to Nampa resulted from the confluence of several factors. The demand for Idaho state-funded psychiatric services have grown along with Idaho's population, and SHS has a need for those 20 additional beds in Blackfoot for adult patients.
