Energy Express Program Returning to Ohio County | News, Sports, Jobs

Students enjoy a past session of Energy Express, a summer education program coordinated by the West Virginia University Extension Service.
The Energy Express summer education program is returning to Ohio County, creating learning opportunities for both young school students and the student mentors who teach them.
Coordinated by the West Virginia University Extension Service, Energy Express is a six-week summer program for rising students in grades 1-4.
Mentors start their training on June 10, while the first day for students is June 21. The program extends through July 30. Participating students will be in class from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each weekday through that time. ....

Soroptimist International of Wheeling is honoring two working mothers with “Live Your Dream” scholarships to help them with education, home and childcare needs while they work and go to school.
Alexandria Dingess, a Fairmont, West Virginia resident, is a nursing major at West Virginia Northern Community College who will receive $2,000 from SI of Wheeling.
Allysa Shelley, of Warwood, studies business administration at West Virginia Junior College in Morgantown, and will receive $1,500. She has plans to someday start her own business, said Barb LaRue, co-president of SI of Wheeling and a member of the club’s “Live Your Dream” committee. ....

WHEELING Annual events to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have been canceled in Wheeling this year, but a remembrance of the civil rights leader will take place online.
MLK Celebration Committee Co-Chairs Rev. Ignatius Sasmita, S.J. and Ron Scott Jr. have announced the annual march slated for Sunday and other events “have been cancelled out of an abundance of caution and to adhere with the State of West Virginia guidelines.” ....

Beacon Awards shines a light on young W. Virginia leaders

The task force worked to identify the factors behind those numbers and then looked at models that appeared to work well in other communities. The results prompted Rexroad to launch the United Way of Harrison County’s Solution-Focused Street Outreach and Rapid Rehousing Programs - just as the COVID-19 pandemic was hitting West Virginia. Shelters were being forced to limit their services statewide at the same time that an increasing number of people were becoming homeless due to economic conditions.
“We decided to gear up for an outreach effort,” in conjunction with the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, said Rexroad, now the Housing and Communications Director for United Way of Harrison County. “We screened the entire population that we had outside and we pulled the highest risk folks … into a hotel where they could quarantine.
