Excelsior production celebrates 'Christmas in July'

AUBURN â With just a few weeks until actors were set to take to the stage in performances of âThe Best Christmas Pageant Everâ last December, Excelsior Arts Academy and Youth Theater Executive Director Kent Johnson was forced to cancel the show.
Cases of COVID-19 were on the rise, and while the First Christian Church in Auburn was the perfect setting to tell the Christmas story, there was not the room needed for the cast to socially distance backstage, Johnson explained.
âThis was one of the most difficult decisions I ever had to make. As you might guess, many people were disappointed due to the amount of work that had already occurred,â Johnson said. ....

People are ready to be creative again, said Amber Turner, the producing artistic director of Public Theatre of Kentucky. They re just really, really hungry for things to do, especially kids for our summer camp. More than a year after the original production was set to take place, the Anamosa Raiders Production of âLittle Shop of Horrorsâ is set to take to the stage.
Originally scheduled to take place last spring, then in the fall before COVID cases spiked, the production will hold three shows April 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. and April 18 at 2 p.m.
âI made the joke, âIf you have to be stuck in a musical for a year and a half, this is the one that you want,ââ Drama Director Dani Helmich said. âItâs just exciting and different, and weâve really enjoyed it.â ....

Main Street Players are asking for help through a GoFundMe campaign after the company s office and storage areas sustained damaged from drainage backup that took place last month.
The theatre group has suffered major damage to its costumes, props, set pieces, furniture, and most office equipment. Most items will have to be replaced as they were submerged in over 18 inches of water.
To help offset the costs of replacement, the company has launched a GoFundMe with a goal of $15,000. At press time, $1,275 has been raised. To learn more or to make a donation, click here. ....

Lisa Sain Odom, the 2021 recipient of the Voice Pedagogy Award from the NATS Foundation. The $500 prize is awarded annually to a candidate who is a member of NATS for the purpose of study at a seminar or workshop on voice pedagogy and/or voice science. The selection was made by a committee of NATS Foundation board members.
The award will be applied toward Odom’s attendance at the Voice Pedagogy Institute, Rider University (July 26-30, 2021). ....
