U.S. Army Special Forces, affectionately referred to as the “Green Berets,” are one of America’s most elite and capable special operations units. They have been at the forefront of the fight against terrorism, but their operational relevancy goes back for decades. Special Forces have a plethora of mission sets. Some of these include Direct Action, Special Reconnaissance, Counter-terrorism, Counter-insurgency, Foreign Internal Defense, Unconventional Warfare, Security Force Assistance, Information Operations, and Peace Operations.

Like many special operations forces, the Special Forces trace their lineage back to WWII. Meet the First U.S. Green Beret to Graduate From Thai Ranger School


The Green Beret, who is assigned to the 1
st Special Forces Group, finished the course as the honor graduate.
With a duration of 10 weeks, the Thai Ranger School is broken down into five phases: Mountain, Forest, Swamp, Maritime, and Urban. During each phase, students are graded on every patrol role (platoon leader, squad leader, medic, paceman, navigator) and they have to lead both platoons and squads during missions. In addition, they are evaluated on how well they compose operations orders.
“As a Green Beret, we’re supposed to be masters of the basics,” the unnamed Green Beret said in a press release. “This course took me back to the basics. For instance, navigating off one map per platoon…In a [Special Forces] team you have eight maps plus GPS.” ....

Tributes pour in after Green Beret's noncombat death

Dozens of people have paid homage online to a Green Beret who died last week in a noncombat incident, while hundreds have raised more than $50,000 for the wife and young daughter he left behind.
Warrant Officer John Wirka, 36, of 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), died Jan. 14, the command said in a statement over the weekend, providing few details about the circumstances of the incident or where it occurred.
“With this tragic event, John leaves behind his spouse and one child,” said Col. John W. Sannes, 7th Group commander. “John served his nation honorably and was loved by many. We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our finest soldiers.” ....

Six years ago on August 24, 2014, Army Captain Carey DuVal was living a nightmare. He was then an infantry lieutenant conducting a patrol consisting of several Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles MRAPs. The vehicles were sweeping roads in their assigned area in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, looking for IEDs. 
Then a Toyota pickup truck filled with explosives crashed into the side of his vehicle. The force of the explosion flipped the 15-ton MRAP on its side, blowing the door off. All five of the soldiers inside the vehicle were wounded, with DuVal the most seriously wounded of all.  ....
