Since 1795, a lot of businesses have come and gone in Sevierville’s commercial district. It is not unusual to hear older residents refer to the location of businesses by mentioning what business used to occupy the space where a current business is located. Founded in 1909, Sevier County Bank has been in operation longer than any business in Sevierville. In 2006, the main office of the historic business relocated on East Main Street. Sevier County Bank is now located very close to where it started over a century ago. Actually, the new bank building sits where the White Store, a popular grocery store for many years once stood. ....

Upland Chronicles — Rev. Charles Maples was a pastor 27 years in Gatlinburg


According to people who knew him Charles Maples was a singer, actor, marriage counselor, and sometimes even a psychiatrist.
But above all else he was “Preacher Charlie,” minister and pastor of the First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg.
Born Oct. 21, 1914 in Winigan, Missouri, Charles Carroll Maples was a son of Rev. Lewis Howard Maples and Margaret Houser Maples. Although he had deep roots in Sevier County, at the time Charles was born his father was serving as pastor of a Baptist church in Sullivan County, Missouri.
Not only did Charles follow in the footsteps of his father, but his brother Lewis and his maternal grandfather George Houser were also preachers. In fact, his father and grandfather served as pastor of White Oak Flats Baptist Church before its name was changed to First Baptist of Gatlinburg. ....

Judge Buford Townsend remembered as a dedicated jurist


Born March 30, 1901, Buford Alvin Townsend was a son of Reverend Wilson E. Townsend and Margaret M. Dixon. His father died at age 30 when Buford was five months old, leaving his 25-year-old mother to raise him and his two older brothers. They resided on a farm in the East Fork community and he received his early education in one-room rural schools, before he attended high school at Smoky Mountain Academy.
Townsend always worked to pay his expenses while attending high school. He obtained a teaching certificate and taught his first class when he was 17. Later, Townsend enrolled in two-year accredited college courses at Murphy College. While attending Murphy College, he taught Latin and math to help cover some of his expenses. ....
