Mesa, Tempe sites reveal new details about history of O'odham peoples

Shane Anton stood at the mouth of a hand-hewn irrigation canal that dates back centuries before the arrival of the first European explorers. The ancient waterway, 10 feet wide and about 5 feet deep, sits in a small desert park surrounded by tract homes in Lehi, a neighborhood in north Mesa.
Our belief is we ve been here since time immemorial, said Anton, an Onk Akimel O odham and a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and the need to farm was always there.
The 4,500-foot-long-canal at Mesa s Park of the Canals is a tiny fragment of a system that once spanned more than 700 miles along the Salt and Gila rivers, bringing life-giving water to Anton s ancestors, the Hohokam, or as the contemporary O odham peoples call them, the Huhugam. ....

How to include Indigenous researchers and their knowledge – TangataWhenua.com

Researchers from Native American and Indigenous communities explain how colleagues and institutions can help them to battle marginalization.
Despite long-standing calls to increase diversity on university campuses, Indigenous researchers remain poorly represented in academia, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. For example, Maori people make up about 17% of the population of New Zealand, but the percentage of Maori academic researchers is much lower. A 2019 study found that Maori researchers comprise less than 5% of the full-time academic workforce at New Zealand’s eight universities. Tara McAllister, a freshwater ecologist and diversity researcher at the University of Auckland and a member of the Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki tribe, was lead author of that work and of a follow-on study in 2020. It found minimal change in Indigenous representation between 2008 and 2018 at those eight universi ....

But he ran into an issue. “The river bottom where I gather material on the south side is where Mesa’s sewage plant is.”
He believes the sewage plant’s discharges affect the groundwater and makes the bark too brittle to use as post ties.
“The bark broke too easily, and I couldn’t use it to tie anything down,” he said. Manuel had to resort to wire to finish the watto.
Manuel also said that arrowweed (
Pluchea sericea) doesn’t grow as abundantly as it once did. Not only is it in short supply due to the decline of riparian areas, but when he does find it, the plants have growths or other imperfections. That means he has to travel to more isolated areas to gather arrowweed that hasn’t been affected by human activity. ....
