NIH training grant enhances opportunities for biomedical graduate students at AU

Augusta University has received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to help support the graduate education of future scientists whose focus is cardiometabolic diseases like hypertension and diabetes which disproportionally affect minorities.
The training grant (1HL155011-01A1) will support four graduate students in its first year, and scale up to six students per year by year four of the five-year grant. It will offer aspiring PhDs and MD/PhDs the opportunity to learn from 43 federally funded scientists focusing on different aspects of cardometabolic disease related to minority health. Student recruitment has just started. ....

Convenience over reputation: Study looks at how older adults pick a doctor

Convenience and access win out over reputation when people over 50 look for a doctor for themselves, a new study finds.
But online ratings and reviews of physicians play an important role, and should receive attention from providers and policymakers, the researchers say.
About 20% of older adults called such ratings very important to them, but 43% said they had checked such reviews in the past for physicians they were considering for themselves.
Still, factors like insurance acceptance, appointment availability, location and hours won out over reputational information, although about 40% said a recommendation from another physician was very important to them. Recommendations from family and friends were rated as very important by about 20% of older adults. ....

On 7 April 2021, we kicked off a training course for the staff of the Audio-visual Council of the Republic of Moldova on monitoring and sanctioning hate speech. The training will include 4 online session over April 2021, with the following objectives:
Familiarising participants with key human rights concepts, including equality, non-discrimination and the links to hate speech
Familiarising participants with relevant case-law on hate speech, including from the European Court of Human Rights ....
