There was a lot of crime in the neighborhood where Jared Diaz Barrios was growing up. He couldn’t just run outside and play it wasn’t safe, especially when it got dark. But Jared saw a challenge in the adversity.
“Even if I couldn’t do anything about the unsafe neighborhood at age 7, I knew that if I stayed academically strong I could eventually, one day, start to make changes and overcome the obstacles,” Jared said. He set his mind on studying hard.
Jared, 15, rose to the challenge. Not only is he a top student with a 4.0 GPA in honors classes at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, he is constantly working to help his community serving meals to folks in need during the pandemic, cleaning up parks and feeding the homeless, and mentoring other youths along with leading an effort to package several thousand face masks for the community. ....

Jared Diaz Barrios named Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Youth leader. Academic standout. Selfless volunteer. Now, Mission Hill High student Jared Diaz Barrios has one more title to add to the impressive list of accomplishments in his young life: 2021 Boys & Girls Club of San Diego County Youth of the Year.
Jared was selected Youth of the Year at the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos in January, was named San Diego County Youth of the Year in March, and will move on to represent the county in the California Youth of the Year competition in April.
Jared is active in the Boys & Girls Club’s Leaders in Training Program and Keystone, a national Boys & Girls Club program encouraging community service. He has completed over 200 community service hours in the past year; helping to serve 500 meals daily at the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos during the COVID-19 pandemic, working on fundraisers to aid fellow clubs in Los Angeles that were impacted by recent wildfires, and partnering with other organizations to feed a ....

Teen Tech Center at Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos gets more funding

The nonprofit Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos received funding from Sony Electronics to run its Best Buy Teen Tech Center another five years.
The 2,000-square-foot Teen Tech Center, which opened in 2017 with a grant from Best Buy, gives kids 13-18 a chance to get hands-on experience using state-of-the-art technology in areas ranging from programming and filmmaking to music production and design.
The San Marcos site is one of 35 such Best Buy Teen Tech Centers across North America and one of three in California.
“We know the needs of teens and our collective responsibility to act have never been so high,” said Andrea Wood, vice president of social impact at Best Buy. ....
