THE defeated SNP candidate in the Dumbarton constituency says tactical voting played a significant role in his failure to win the marginal seat.
Toni Giugliano had high hopes of capturing the constituency from Labour’s Jackie Baillie for the first time since the Scottish Parliament was established in 1999.
Mr Giugliano increased both the SNP’s total vote and the party’s vote share compared to the last Holyrood election in 2016.
But in the end he fell short as Ms Baillie increased her majority from a wafer-thin 109 five years ago to 1,483 this time round. ....

Marie McNair celebrates becoming Clydebank’s first female MSP
Clydebank’s new MSP has vowed to put the pandemic recovery as her first priority ahead of being sworn in on Thursday.
Marie McNair retained the Clydebank and Milngavie seat for the SNP with the largest number of votes for any candidate since the constituency was created in 1999.
The Clydebank Waterfront councillor is also the first woman elected to represent the area and was emotional in her victory speech at the Clydebank Leisure Centre count on Friday.
Speaking yesterday, Ms McNair told the Post: “It is humbling to be elected as our MSP and I thank the electorate for putting their trust in me. It is a huge honour to represent the place I grew up in and to be the first woman to be elected as our MSP. ....

Scottish Parliament election: Jackie Baillie wins Dumbarton constituency | Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Reporter

JACKIE BAILLIE has won a sixth consecutive term as Helensburgh and Lomond s MSP.
Scottish Labour’s deputy held off a stiff challenge from SNP candidate Toni Giugliano to win a tightly-fought contest for the Dumbarton seat.
The result was announced by returning officer Joyce White at the counting hall in Clydebank Leisure Centre at 8.35pm on Friday.
Ms Baillie won 17,825 votes, increaseing her majority from 109 votes to 1,485.
Mr Giugliano got 16,342 votes for the SNP, while Maurice Corry was third for the Conservatives with 3,205.
Andy Foxall polled 676 votes for the Liberal Democrats, while James Morrison was the leading independent with 183. ....
