Senate Judiciary B heard some chippy testimony from the public, including one person who attacked the integrity of the committee’s Chairman during a hearing on House-approved legislation giving St. Tammany residents the right to vote on whether they want a casino to be built on the water outside of Slidell.
Slidell resident Camille Thompson spoke against the bill. She said it’s not fair that people in the Parish outside of Slidell get to vote on this.
“What if somebody wanted to put a toilet in your back yard and they were going to vote on it in the next town over? How would you feel about that?” Thompson asked the committee. ....

Slidell casino vote approved in the House

The House approves legislation that would allow St. Tammany voters the chance to vote on whether or not a waterfront casino should be built just outside Slidell.
The bill was brought by Slidell Representative Mary DuBuisson who quoted recent survey results indicating local support for the right to vote on the issue. She said the poll shows 93 percent of parish residents want the right to vote on the question and 67 percent support the project.
DuBuisson pointed to a 2009 Gaming Control Board study shows Louisiana loses about 3.2 million people per year to Mississippi casinos. She said this project would potentially capture about a third of those losses and could generate 27.2 million in revenue for the state. ....

License for Diamond Jacks Casino Might Move to Slidell
The plan to move the Diamond Jacks Casino license from Bossier City to south Louisiana is moving forward. There is a proposal to move the local license to the Slidell area.
Citizens of St. Tammany Parish would first have to vote to have the gambling complex built on Lake Ponchatrain in the Slidell area. The State Gaming Control Board would also have to ok moving the license.
The Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill to let the process move forward for a gambling establishment in southeast Louisiana. The vote to move out of committee was 4-3. The bill is now headed to the Senate floor. ....

A Senate committee narrowly approves legislation allowing the people of St. Tammany Parish to vote on allowing a casino to operate in Slidell.
Bill author Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt said a developer has proposed a waterfront casino that would create 1,900 permanent jobs and keep parish residents from spending money in Mississippi.
“We have Mississippi casinos who are members of our St. Tammany Chamber, they are big sponsors of lots of local community events in Slidell because we are good customers in Mississippi,” said Hewitt. “We love the crab leg buffet in Bay St. Lewis.” ....
