Pandemic 'never dared to stop our brilliance,' Lancaster Catholic grads say


Perhaps the first time Lancaster Catholic High School seniors saw some of their classmates without masks all year was Thursday — graduation day.
The 148-member Class of 2021 gathered together Thursday morning outside, mostly unmasked at Crusader Stadium to celebrate the end of four years, almost half of which consisted of masks, social distancing and an unprecedented level of unpredictability due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I really have great admiration for you,” commencement speaker the Most Rev. Ronald Gainer, bishop of Diocese of Harrisburg, told the graduates. “To say that your senior year was unique would be an understatement. The last months of your junior year and your senior year was nothing short of extraordinary.” ....

Temple College graduation ceremony set for Saturday


Temple College will recognize its 2020 and 2021 graduates at a commencement ceremony to be held Saturday, the school announced.
The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. at Crusader Stadium on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor campus in Belton.
Temple College, founded in 1926, will recognize both the 2020 and 2021 recipients of the Claudia and W.T. Barnhart Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. The 2020 recipient of the award is Kim George, a professor of English, and the 2021 recipient is Kimberley Clawson, a biology professor.
All new graduates will receive a free one-year membership in the new Temple College Alumni and Friends Association, according to a news release. ....

Over 400 students receive degrees at UMHB commencement


BELTON — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor held a commencement ceremony for its 165th graduating class on Saturday in Crusader Stadium, as 490 students received degrees, including 415 baccalaureate degrees, 57 master’s degrees and 18 doctoral degrees.
UMHB President Randy O’Rear praised students for their dedication and determination to complete their degrees in unprecedented times.
“During your junior year, the COVID-19 pandemic altered almost every aspect of college life,” he said. “It was the longest spring break of all our lives. As seniors, you also survived the once-in-a-lifetime winter storm. These things helped you learn to be intentional and to not take anything, even the little things, for granted. I hope that is one lesson that stays with you as you leave UMHB.” ....

Sandra Mayo and her daughter Kathryn Nitcher have always been close but their bond is deeper now.
The plan is to go be a nurse. My daughter has inspired me to be one and to be one like her, Mayo said. ....
