By NU Office of Communications May 03, 2021 NORTHFIELD, Vt. Norwich University named Dr. Julia Bernard as its first-ever vice president of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, effective July 1. Bernard now serves as interim chair and associate professor in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Counseling and Human Services. She holds a doctorate in child development and family studies, a master’s in marriage and family therapy, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Purdue University. She is also a certified nursing assistant who holds numerous certificates in disciplines including leading in equity, diversity and inclusion in higher education; ecopsychology; clinical trauma; mental health first aid; mediation and several others. ....
This spring, East Tennessee State University launched its inaugural ETSU Mentored Substance Use Research training program, designed to train substance use researchers across multiple disciplines in order to improve health outcomes in Central Appalachia. Ten ETSU graduate students from multiple colleges and disciplines were selected for the inaugural cohort and are paired with a faculty mentor to train them in substance use research. Ten faculty members are participating as mentors in the program, which is led by Dr. Manik Ahuja, assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Management and Policy in the ETSU College of Public Health. Ahuja, a trained substance use researcher, spearheaded the EMSUR program at ETSU after he was selected as one of five faculty members from across the country to attend New York Universityâs Substance Abuse Research Education and Training Visiting Development Mentor Program. ....
Dr. Cathy Galyon, a faculty member in the Clemmer College at East Tennessee State University, has been elected incoming chair of the American Council on Rural Special Education (ACRES). ACRES is a national organization of nearly 200 members dedicated to advancing the delivery of special education in rural locations. Galyon, who teaches in ETSUâs Department of Educational Foundations and Special Education, says that while there is a high turnover of special education teachers across the country, the issue is especially problematic in rural areas. âIn some places, there may be only one special education teacher in the whole county,â Galyon said. âSome of them feel isolated, and we want to support these educators by advocating to the government for more resources and funding. ....

Born and raised in Miami, Jessie Wang grew up attending large and diverse public schools which, along with being biracial herself, gave her an appreciation for diversity from an early age. Wang left Miami for Boston to attend Emmanuel College where she served as student government president and discovered a passion for working with college-age students. After earning a bachelorâs in health and counseling psychology in 2019, Wang applied for several graduate school programs and was accepted into all of them, choosing Harvard University. During her time at Harvard, she focused on research on fostering underrepresented student success, particularly among students on color and first-generation students at predominantly white institutions of higher education. ....
