The 2021-22 Federal Budget has been released and it has a big technology focus, with the Government pledging nearly AU$1 billion as part of its Digital Economy Strategy. This funding includes spending for Artificial Intelligence (AI), the improvement of Australia’s digital connectivity, and for the development of digital skills for workers, to allow Australia to better compete with the rest of the world in key areas of the digital economy.
Boost to the Government’s Artificial Intelligence Action Plan
To boost the development of AI in business and to break down barriers to the AI industry, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced $124.1 million in funding for AI as part of the Government’s Artificial Intelligence Action Plan. The Queensland Resources Council has welcomed an announcement of a $100m, four-year renewal of its Junior Minerals Exploration Incentive.
QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane said the federal government s move would help Queensland explorers bring new technology like remote sensing, machine learning and bio-indicators to the field.
The program will give eligible exploration companies access to tax incentives to attract new investors into the sector and potentially benefit 500-plus mineral exploration companies currently operating across Queensland, Mr Macfarlane said.
He said about 70 per cent of exploration companies in Queensland have a market capitalisation value of less than $500m, meaning they re eligible to apply for tax incentives under the renewed JMEI program. ....

Horror night: two crashes claim two lives in western CQ

A 16-year-old boy and a man in his 20s died in separate crashes on Friday night, bringing the state’s 2021 road death toll to 94.
The teenager died in a crash north-west of Emerald that involved four teenagers.
Police said a 4WD driven by a 14-year-old boy was travelling along a dirt section of Wills Road about 6pm.
Early indications suggest the car rolled several times and crashed when the driver lost control.
Emergency services rendered first aid to the 16-year-old passenger, but he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Two other passengers and the driver, all aged 14, were taken to hospital with minor injuries. ....
