Preschool tutoring is coming to Goodhue County

Red Wing Public Schools is working with Reading Corps and Math Corps to bring tutoring for preschool students to Goodhue County. Nine tutors are being recruited for Cannon Falls, Pine Island and Red Wing.
“In Minnesota, it’s generally reported that nearly half of our students struggle with reading or math,” Megan Peterson, senior manager for the Corps, said. “The number of students needing extra help is growing, especially after more than a year of disruptions to learning due to COVID-19. For that reason, Goodhue County schools were chosen, along with hundreds of schools throughout the state, for on-site tutor placement.” ....

Superintendent Karsten Anderson receives mid-year evaluation, areas of improvement revealed

A mid-year evaluation of Karsten Anderson, superintendent of Red Wing Public Schools, revealed areas of improvement and strength.
The evaluation was conducted in a closed session June 7 by the Red Wing School Board and was based on four goals that the board previously identified in November 2020.
The following is a summary of the goals and the board’s feedback for each, which became public at the June 21 meeting.
Goal 1: Equity planning
The district is committed to strengthening this area through leadership.
The board’s feedback: “We have a good start on this goal, but some felt that this should have been addressed a long time ago. More outreach is needed in diverse groups, and in all corners of our community. The board believes that the superintendent is committed to working on this goal and appreciates his willingness to dive into the difficult conversations.” ....

Red Wing School District will address native students' needs | News

An impassioned Nicky Buck urged fellow Red Wing School Board members to start meeting Native American students’ needs.
The board met on April 19 and approved a response to the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee’s (AIPAC) findings presented March 8. The AIPAC issued a resolution of non-concurrence, which means that committee members determined the district has not been meeting American Indian students’ needs as required under state law.
“The district did fail me by not setting up things for me to learn the way that I learn with my culture, my traditions and my language,” Buck said. “And now, as I m watching that next generation come up you know, like I said I pulled my own kids from the school so I can engulf them with their culture, traditions and language so that way when they get in that outside world that they re not struggling to survive. So I really appreciate everybody s time and effort into this.” ....
