EDMONTON A security officer at Red Deer’s south side Walmart was stabbed Saturday afternoon. RCMP told CTV News Edmonton that the officer was trying to apprehend a shoplifter around 4 p.m. Saturday. A fight broke out and the suspect fled the store, police said. According to the RCMP, it was not after the shoplifter had ran away that the security officer discovered he was stabbed multiple times with an unknown object. The officers injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Mounties said. There is no suspect description at this time. RCMP say they are continuing to investigate the incident. ....
RED DEER This weekend The Market at Red Deer returns for its 51st year. The market will open Saturday at the Servus Arena parking lot and will run every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until Thanksgiving weekend in October. “We’re happy to be opening,” said Dennis Moffat, the retired owner and manager of the market. “We were concerned and afraid that we would have to stay closed for a long time, but the people of Red Deer have their market open again for the 51st year.” The market will maintain the same COVID-19 protocols as it had last year. People are asked to wear masks and adhere to the physical distancing rule. ....
EDMONTON A Canada-based company has selected a Red Deer research clinic to participate in its late-stage COVID-19 vaccine study. Medicago, a biopharmaceutical company based in Quebec City, focuses on developing novel vaccines using plant-based technology. The company’s vaccine candidate is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials. “They introduce the genetic material into a plant and then the plant is basically a little factory and grows and then the virus-like particles get harvested from the leaves,” said the study’s investigator and general practitioner, Dr. Morné Odendaal. The virus-like particles mimic the target virus – in this case the coronavirus – so they are easily recognized by the immune system. However, the virus-like particles contain no genetic material, so they are “non-infectious and unable to replicate.” ....
RED DEER A central Alberta company that builds log homes has received its first international contract in the United States. Langberg Log Homes located in Rocky Mountain House is a small, family-owned-and-operated company that has been building log homes in central Alberta for 20 years, and now, Elkhart, Indiana. “Not only is it our biggest project by far, but it’s our first international build too,” said Langberg Log Homes Owner Steven Langberg. The company has been asked to build a 16,000-square foot log home with a swimming pool, an indoor bowling alley, slides attached to the stairs, and a nine foot knights of the round dining table. ....
