Avian Keratin Disorder explained by Birdwatcher's General Store

Wicked Local
Dear Bird Folks,
Please take a look at the attached photo of this Red-breasted Nuthatch. It seems to have an extra long, hummingbird-style beak. We call it a “hum-hatch.” Any explanation?
–Rocky, Eastham, MA
This could be big, Rocky, One of the major drawbacks of being in the bird feeding business is that there’s rarely anything new. Other industries are continuously designing refreshed cars, TVs, video games, etc., but birdfeeders have been basically the same for decades. And it’s been eons since a different bird species was invented.
The idea of a totally new bird, one that’s half-nuthatch and half-hummingbird, would be both cool and a boon to business. Unfortunately, this is not the case here. There is something wrong with the bird in your yard, which means I have to give you a serious answer and I hate doing that. Oh, well. Here goes. ....

Birds as an alternative activity

It’s January!
This is no time of year for robins. There were five of them. They were in the trees, flying down to the ground and back into the trees.
Robins are common everywhere in the U.S. and in southern Canada in summer. But in the northern states, including northern Indiana, robins are gone in winter. They’ve flown south, migrated. To us in the northern states, robins are regarded as a sign of spring, harbingers of spring.
I’ve seen robins in northern Indiana in January before. But I don’t recall seeing them in my yard in January. When I’ve seen them in northern Indiana in winter I’ve seen a small flock in a woodland, the state park near my home, for example. ....

Outstanding Cooper’s Hawk photo.   I used to see them darting around our LA neighborhood;  very common Accipiter down there, the  Sharp-Shinned much more abundant here.

I took several photos of the Cooper’s hawk, and after examining its prey closely I guessed that it was a Norway rat, or maybe a mouse of some kind. The head is face-down, and you can see one of the ears fairly well, which do not protrude like that on a mole. The feet do look lik ....

Bitterroot Outdoor Journal - Visit Maclay Flat

Bitterroot Outdoor Journal
Bob Danley of the Bitterroot Outdoor Journal recently walked out along the Bitterroot River at Maclay Flat. Doing so, he noted a bird, a mammal, a tree and a lichen to encompass a wide range of natural features in one easy-to-access location.
This Lolo National Forest area is mainly populated with Ponderosa Pine trees (photo below). The trees can grow up to 195 feet and they do best in dry soils. We see many of them on western Montana mountainsides. In fact, you can find Ponderosa Pine on about 27 million acres of the West, Bob says.
In the lower branches of the tree is a lichen that lives on the bare branch beyond the conifer needles (see photo below). The Brown-eyed Sunshine Lichen grows year-round and is only about one and half inches in diameter. The bright yellow color is obvious. It has what look like brown eyes. That s where the reproductive spores are released. It is not a parasite on the tree and instead relies on rain and moisture ....
