(WVIR) - A suspicious object was discovered and detonated by police on Charlottesvilleâs Downtown Mall early Saturday morning. The Charlottesville Fire and Police Departments were contacted about a suspicious device just before 6 a.m. in the 100 block of 4th Street SE. After securing the area and investigating, the Virginia State Police were called in for a controlled detonation of the device. The remains of the object are being examined in the VSP Division of Forensic Science to determine what exactly it was. ....

(WVIR) - New data is showing just how much learning loss is affecting the youngest students in Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS). In a key literacy assessment, students below the benchmark increased by more than 10%. Participation in benchmarks is down across the board in ACPS, but the data shows that while older students have been less impacted, elementary school students are increasingly falling behind. ....

(WVIR) - Bar and restaurant owners on Charlottesvilleâs Downtown Mall are celebrating the passage of a new bill clearing the way for more open liquor areas. S.B. 1471 would allow localities to create their own âoutdoor refreshment areas,â where people could carry and drink alcohol outside a restaurant or patio. Currently, the law only allows localities to do so for special events, and only up to a maximum of 16 times a year. The new bill would allow localities to pass an ordinance allowing that area to operate year-round. ....

(WVIR) - A new bill would make the road to clearing a criminal record easier in Virginia. As it stands, Virginians seeking to seal their records have to go through a petition-based process. The bill, H.B. 2113, would allow automatic sealing for charges that were dropped or dismissed, as well as some misdemeanor charges more than 7 years old. It would also extend petition-based sealing of records to crimes like marijuana possession. ....
