The Union health ministry on Sunday said that 17,072 people were administered coronavirus vaccines across six states on the second day of India’s inoculation drive.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain said 51 cases of minor complications were reported after the vaccination drive. There was one serious adverse event, he added.
India registered 15,144 new coronavirus cases, taking the overall count to 1,05,57,985. The country’s toll rose by 181 to 1,52,274. India’s active cases stood at 2,08,826, while the number of recoveries reached 1,01,96,885. ....

WHO approval for AstraZeneca vaccine should come soon: Serum CEO


The Serum Institute of India expects WHO emergency-use authorization soon for the Oxford University/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, which it is producing for mid and low income countries, its chief executive said.
“The emergency use licensure from the WHO (World Health Organization) should be available and coming through in the next week or two, hopefully, because we have submitted everything,” Adar Poonawalla told the Reuters Next conference on Thursday.
Poonawalla also said his company, the world’s biggest vaccine maker, would start stockpiling millions of doses of the Novavax coronavirus vaccine candidate from around April.
“It will be upwards of 40-50 million doses per month is what we are trying to stockpile of the Novavax product,” he said. ....

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Thursday said that some individuals may have side effects after they are administered the coronavirus vaccine, as the country gears up to undertake the mammoth task of inoculating its citizens from January 16. This includes mild fever, pain at injection site and bodyache, he said.
The minister, however, assured that there was nothing out of ordinary about it as the effects would be temporary and similar to the ones experienced while getting other vaccines.
“After being administered Covid-19 vaccine, some individuals may have side effects like mild fever, pain at injection site and bodyache,” he wrote on Twitter. “This is similar to the side effects that occur post some other vaccines. These are expected to go away on their own after some time.” ....
