Asheville cost of living is more than teacher pay

Gov. Roy Cooper took notice of teacher pay discrepancy in his fiscal years 2021-23 budget recommendations.
Cooper proposes the state appropriate $268.9 million in fiscal year 2022 and $439.3 million in fiscal year 2023 in teacher pay “to decrease pay disparity between educators and similarly credentialed and experienced professionals in other fields,” his recommendation states.
“This budget also works to make good on our state’s Constitutional duty to make sure every child has access to a sound basic education,” Cooper said in a press release. “We know how to do that: Attract and keep good teachers with competitive pay and recruit young people to make teaching a career.” ....

ACS and BCS teachers don't get Memorial Day as a holiday this year

But ACS didn t tell teachers about the switch from a holiday to a work day until May 12, just two and a half weeks before Memorial Day.
“Dr. Dickerson informed employees about our school calendar issue once it was brought to his attention by our legal counsel,” ACS spokeswoman Ashley-Michelle Thublin said. Mark Dickerson is the ACS assistant superintendent of administration
The calendar issue Thublin is referring to was a miscalculation of holidays that Dickerson informed staff about via email May 12.
Per state law, the only holiday school districts are required to give their teachers and staff off is Veterans Day. Further, public school employees cannot have more holidays than state employees. This year, that was 12 days. The ACS 2020-21 calendar, released last school year, included 13 holidays for staff and students.  ....

Buncombe County predicts lower state testing scores because of COVID

Local schools anticipate students will not perform as well as usual in state testing due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s weighty strain on education.
Buncombe County Schools Director of Testing Steve Earwood said because “many students have had their education disrupted,” the district is preparing for lower test scores.
“The results may be lower than they would have been in a normal year, but it will be reflective of the learning that has taken place,” Earwood said. “We may find that the students will do much better than we think they will. We don’t know which is why we need the assessments to accurately gauge the impact COVID has had on the education of our students.” ....
