OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) - Third and fourth-grade students at Sutton Elementary School got to learn the rules of the road in a unique way Thursday.
School officials say those students took part in the Norton Childrenâs Hospital Bike Safety Rodeo.
The event takes place at schools throughout Kentucky each year and is designed to teach hands-on bicycle safety.
Organizers say a professional instructor from Norton Childrenâs Prevention & Wellness taught the importance of wearing helmets and how to safely ride in their neighborhoods. ....

Sutton Elementary Honors Former Teacher Through Pet Supply Drive

Sutton Elementary School is hosting Help Friends with Paws For Melissa Baber and they need your help.
Tiffany Hoffman, Kindergarten Teacher, at Sutton Elementary School was blessed to work alongside, Melissa Baber, her former assistant. In 2015, Melissa was taken suddenly and way too soon in 2015. Mrs. Hoffman wanted to do something to keep her memory and spirit alive for years to come.

Melissa loved animals. Tiffany decided to host a pet supply drive in her classroom the first year and after that, it caught on throughout the whole school eventually becoming community-wide.

Now students have a friendly competition among classrooms. They set goals each year. This year s first place is a Shaved Ice Party, the second place is Extra P.E. time with Mrs. Roberts, and the third place is a visit from the FRC Candy Cart. ....

HISD parents concerned after virtual learning amid storm recovery lasts 40 minutes

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) After last week s winter storm closed down schools, most districts opted to go virtual on Wednesday. But in Houston ISD, there was a catch.
Parents told ABC13 their kids were only required to log in for a short time without any teachers. They add this created a lot of confusion.
When we reached with some questions to the district, here s what it had to say in response.
Students were told they would only have to log in for about 40 minutes [Wednesday] to complete assignments, yet no teachers. Why was that decision made?
Teachers were provided a teacher preparation day and had the option to return to campuses or work remotely [Wednesday Feb. 24] before returning in person on Thursday, Feb. 25. After our students and their families experienced a very difficult week, we wanted to make sure all facilities were repaired and ready and that students were able to have a smooth transition back to class using virtual asynchronous learning, HISD said ....

HOUSTON – Today, the world celebrates civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. King’s fight for equal rights and social justice has been an inspiration for people of all generations.
The delivery of King’s “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963 will forever be a moment in our history that inspired change and brought about unity across the globe, even after his assassination in 1968. The speech has inspired several generations in Houston, so much so that an oratory contest happens every year in King’s honor. ....

HISD to hold 25th annual MLK Oratory Competition on Dr. King's birthday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) Twelve Houston Independent School District students shared their 2021 vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr s I have a dream speech during the district s annual oratory competition Friday, which also happened to be King s birthday.
He would have turned 92.
This year, students answered the question, How do you think Dr. King s teachings can help us today?
Fourth and fifth grade HISD students delivered original, three to five minute speeches inspired by the late civil rights leader. Students were judged on delivery, stage presence, content interpretation, and memorization.
