Budget 2021: The Australian electorates with the biggest superannuation gender gaps

Data showing men’s retirement balances are almost twice the size of women’s in some electorates has given ammunition to groups pushing for super contributions to be paid on parental leave.
The biggest gulf in Victoria is in the Gippsland electorate (Gippsland, Wellington, La Trobe), where the median super balance for men is $84,900, compared to $47,400 for women, Australian Taxation Office data analysed by Industry Super Australia shows.
Paying superannuation on parental leave is backed by eight advocacy and industry groups.

In NSW, the Hunter (Cessnock, Muswellbrook, Singleton) and Paterson (Maitland, Nelson Bay, Williamtown) electorates had the largest super gaps at 38 per cent. Both have median balances of $75,000 or more for men while women’s super accounts had less than $48,000. ....

Thousands score $450 budget win

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is set to scrap the $450 a month threshold to pay compulsory super in the 2021 federal budget, boosting the retirement incomes of thousands of part-time workers and mums.
News.com.au has confirmed the threshold will be scrapped in Tuesday s budget, a modest change that will ensure more workers are paid super when they earn even small amounts with a single employer.

It s the threshold that causes almost twice as many women as men to miss out on a super contribution when working in insecure, part-time jobs.
Abolishing the requirement that workers earn $450 a month with a single employer would also not cost employers much - adding only a couple of hundred dollars on average to their costs for each employee. ....

The Australian government’s proposed changes to the superannuation fund performance test have faced criticism after the opposition said the Bill should not be supported following the inclusion of some controversial proposed reforms.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Superannuation Minister Jane Hume released the consultation draft regulations for the new Your Future, Your Super (YFYS) reform package on April 28 as a response to the concerns voiced by the superannuation industry to 2 major changes to the fund performance test.
