Council approves City Hall ramp construction | News, Sports, Jobs

Before approving an accessible ramp construction Thursday at City Hall, City Council learned the entire ramp, automatic doors and elevator project will cost about $500,000.
Council approved the ramp contract with Landserve Inc. in the amount of $164,516.
That company will build the ramp at its factory, a pre-cast concrete ramp, and then it’ll be put up on the West Fourth Street side of City Hall.
Original design was by Gannett-Fleming two years ago, said Jon Sander, city engineer.
Some plumbing and paving will accompany the ramp construction.
Stone veneer will be an add-on bid. The veneer is expected to mesh with the existing facade of City Hall, said Councilwoman Liz Miele. ....

City's accessibility for disabled community gains momentum | News, Sports, Jobs

Landmark developments are happening in terms of Williamsport’s accessibility to the disabled community.
It begins with the first ever Accessibility Commission, which is a body under development, and which will hold an initial meeting at 3 p.m. Feb. 25, a city official involved said.
City Councilman Jon Mackey, who facilitated the commission formation to this point, said the meeting will be held remotely by Zoom technology and accessible by going to the city website and following the lead to YouTube.
“We are excited to be holding our first meeting,” Mackey said.
The names of the commission members and positions to be filled is a work in progress, he said. ....

Mayor Derek Slaughter says he is prepared to use $450,000 of an $850,000 City Hall renovation account to lower the cost on city taxpayers in his proposed $29 million 2021 budget.
But an executive at the Center for Independent Living, 24 E. Third St., an agency advocating on behalf of the disabled, said she wonders if removal of half of that account might mean further delayed accessibility upgrades to City Hall.
“Access to City Hall is a civil right for Williamsport city residents with disabilities and we would hope that should be a priority for the administration and council,” said Misty Dion, the CEO of the Center for Independent Living-Roads to Freedom upon learning about Slaughter’s intention. ....
