The University of Virginia announced this week the appointment of Jennifer L. West as the 14th dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, effective July 1.
West is currently the Associate Dean for Ph.D. Education and the Fitzpatrick Family University Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science at the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University. MIT associate professors Desirée Plata and Justin Steil have been named recipients of the 2020-21 Harold E. Edgerton Faculty Achievement Award. The award’s selection committee chose to recognize both faculty members for their excellence in service, mentorship, and research that impacts critical societal challenges in environmental sustainability and social justice.
The annual Edgerton Faculty Award was established in 1982 as a tribute to Institute Professor Emeritus Harold E. Edgerton in recognition of his active support of junior faculty members. FIU is among three universities receiving NSF funds to study climate change in tropics

In an unprecedented move, the National Science Foundation is providing $300,000 to three universities including FIU to better understand the impact of global climate change on tropical ecosystems.
Three CREST centers at FIU’s Institute of Environment, the University of Puerto Rico and at the University of Hawaii at Hilo each will receive $100,000 for their participation in CRESTropical: A thematic network studying the environmental-epigenetic linkages shaping phenotypic responses in tropical ecosystems.
“This is an amazing opportunity to keep showing our leadership on environmental sciences from creek-to-reef, while making an impact for our students and community,” said Jose Eirin-Lopez, FIU’s lead researcher for the project. ....
