APOLLO BEACH, Fla. - It’s been nearly a week since a rip current took the lives of Kristoff Murray, Janosh Purackal, and his 3-year old son Daniel.
Well first of all, it was just such a shock. Our condolences go out to the families. It was an absolute tragedy, said Forest Turbiville, who runs the county’s Department of Conservation and Environmental Lands Management.

The Apollo Beach Nature Preserve remained closed Wednesday, as county officials worked to get signage installed that will serve as stronger warnings not to swim in the waters. ....

APOLLO BEACH, Fla. — The Apollo Beach Nature Preserve is one of the few beaches in Tampa Bay where dogs are welcome.
As long as your pet is on a six-foot leash, come and enjoy this beautiful beach with your dog and your family and your kids, just a great spot, explains Chris Kiddy with Hillsborough County Conservation and Environmental Lands Management.
Located off US 41, a 25-minute drive from Downtown Tampa, this preserve offers a lot more than sun and sand.

Wildfire burns at Lakeland Highlands Scrub, other sites being monitored


LAKELAND  A lightning strike ignited a wildfire at Lakeland Highlands Scrub Tuesday afternoon that has burned more than 30 acres and remains active. 
Florida Fire Service s Lakeland office received a call around 3 p.m. Tuesday from Polk County asking for assistance to contain a brushfire in Lakeland Highlands Scrub. Strong winds and abnormally dry conditions allowed the spark to quickly spread, according to Todd Chlanda, a spokesperson for Florida Fire Service.
The Lakeland Highlands Scrub fire was considered 95% contained but was still active Wednesday afternoon, according to Chlanda. Polk County officials have since closed off the preserve, as the property is part of the county s Environmental Lands Program. It is expected to be reopened by the weekend.  ....

Walking Club: Exploring Hillsborough County's Eureka Springs Conservation Park


What’s the history?
Albert Greensburg established the park in the 1930s. He donated the botanical garden to Hillsborough County in the 1960s.
“Since then it’s been a huge hotspot for walking, looking at plants and even wildlife viewing, there’s also lots of birds here,” said Rebecca Winch, Environmental Lands Management Technician with Hillsborough County Conservation and Environmental Lands Management.
What is there to do?
The park spans about 30 acres. Visitors will find a third of a mile boardwalk and a nature trail.
You’ll likely occasionally hear the whir of nearby planes taking off and landing at Tampa Executive Airport. ....
