Africatown: Groups seek to change ‘environmental injustice’ in Mobile zoning code

Mobile’s Africatown community is poised to open a new museum this year, and other attractions are soon to follow with a Welcome Center and walking and water tours.
The potential is due to the 2019 discovery of the slave ship Clotilda, which brought 110 enslaved Africans to the U.S. in 1860. Some predict the region becoming a massive draw that rivals the Equal Justice Initiative’s national lynching museum in Montgomery.
But existing environmental issues that have spanned decades continue to plague the community. Activists believe those issues could be a hindrance to Africatown’s potential, and are taking their case to city officials. Virtual Africatown festival to celebrate female Clotilda survivors

Africatown’s 2021 Spirit of Our Ancestors Festival will shift to a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will put the spotlight on women who survived the voyage of the slave ship Clotilda, organizers have announced.
The festival normally is a gathering that features ceremonies to honor the Clotilda survivors who went on to found the unique Africatown community, and the ancestors who preserved its traditions and folkways for generations
That mission stays the same for the third annual event, which is scheduled for Feb. 13 with the theme “Women of Worth.” According to information recently released by organizers, presentations will be made via Zoom; connection details will be announced closer to the event date. ....
