According to the Fergus Highland Games website, declaring the festival a digital event again this year, anyway: Tuesday this week was Happy International Scotch Whiskey Day. Sorry if I’m late with this news but I hope you imbibed, if only by coincidence.
So, I thought about the proliferation of Happy International Something Days and wanted to offer a few of my own.
How about Happy Stop Building Pipelines Day? They are still being built everywhere. The waffling and unpredictable American governments – both federally and in each state – are variously cancelling and allowing pipelines to go through, like a bunch of scatter-brained kids, playing street games. Millions of dollars down the drain of partly or largely built pipelines; millions of dollars poured into finishing (or maybe not when authorities changed their minds) pipelines elsewhere. ....

As part of the city’s Neighborhood and Environmental Protection Plan, Laguna Beach has adopted an ordinance that addresses plastic pollution.
The ordinance, which took effect late last week, bans single-use plastic food ware items in the city’s beaches, parks and trails.
The sale, use or distribution of single-use, to-go plastics such as straws, drink stirrers, eating utensils and take-out bags made from such material is also prohibited.
The city urges food and beverage vendors to use reusable materials when possible. Restaurants are asked not to provide nonplastic alternatives such as paper straws unless a customer requests them. ....

Laguna Beach Plastic Ban is Set to Take Effect
A plastic ban in Laguna Beach, Calif. prohibiting single-use plastic food packaging and cutlery takes effect July 15.
The ban was unanimously approved by city council in March as part of its Neighborhood and Environmental Protection Plan, intended to help mitigate visitor impacts on the city.
Single-use plastic food ware items will be prohibited from all Laguna Beach trails, parks, and beaches. Food and drink vendors will be forbidden from distributing single-use, takeaway plastic or polystyrene food packaging items, which includes bioplastics. The ban includes the use of plastic beverage straws, plastic stirrers, plastic cutlery, and plastic take-out bags. ....
