Opportunity To Lift Freedom Camping Burden From Ratepayers Welcomed

Local Government New Zealand welcomes the long overdue
review of self-contained freedom camping rules announced by
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash today.
“Many councils
across the country welcome the contribution freedom campers
make to local economies,” said LGNZ President Stuart
Crosby. “However, since the National-led Government
changed the legislation to enable freedom camping for the
2011 Rugby World Cup, we’ve been struggling to manage the
impact some campers have on the environment and council
budgets.”

Changes needed to ensure tourism less harmful to environment - Upton


A departure tax, enforcing visitor limits in under pressure destinations and tighter controls on commercial operators have been flagged as part of an overhaul of the tourism industry.

It follows a 2019 report from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment that found that tourism is less environmentally benign than it has often been made out to be.
Today commissioner Simon Upton released four proposals to help the industry become more sustainable and urged the government to take advantage of the pause in international tourism. ....
