The Government’s review of freedom camping is an opportunity to create a nationally consistent approach to managing camping around the country, Tourism Industry Aotearoa says.
While the Freedom Camping Act provides national direction, the requirement for local bylaws to restrict or prohibit freedom camping has resulted in different approaches across the country, creating confusion for travellers, TIA Chief Executive Chris Roberts says. ....

The Government’s review of freedom camping is an
opportunity to create a nationally consistent approach to
managing camping around the country, Tourism Industry
Aotearoa says.
While the Freedom Camping Act provides
national direction, the requirement for local bylaws to
restrict or prohibit freedom camping has resulted in

Local Government New Zealand welcomes the long overdue
review of self-contained freedom camping rules announced by
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash today.
“Many councils
across the country welcome the contribution freedom campers
make to local economies,” said LGNZ President Stuart
Crosby. “However, since the National-led Government
changed the legislation to enable freedom camping for the
2011 Rugby World Cup, we’ve been struggling to manage the
impact some campers have on the environment and council
budgets.”

Tourism Industry Supports Better Freedom Camping Management

Tourism Industry Aotearoa supports Government efforts to
further improve the management of freedom camping in New
Zealand but says the proposals must be fully tested and
assessed.
TIA will make a detailed submission in
response to the discussion
document released by Tourism Minister Stuart Nash
today.
“The tourism industry has done a lot of
thoughtful research and policy development on this issue
already, and we are looking forward to working further with
the Government. We hope to be able to reach agreement on
solutions that will stop the debate on how to manage freedom
camping,” TIA Chief Executive Chris Roberts ....
