The city council voted unanimously to confirm Basterrechea. He was sworn in immediately following the Meridian City Council meeting on Tuesday and will serve as Meridian s fifteenth Chief of Police. “My vote to confirm Chief Basterrechea was one of the easiest in my tenure as a City Council member,” said Meridian City Council President Treg Bernt. “Everyone residing in Meridian is impacted by the public safety efforts of our law enforcement officers. Mayor Robert Simison announced Wednesday that he will appoint veteran officer Tracy Basterrechea as the city s next chief at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 26. If approved by the council, Basterrechea would become Meridian s 15th police chief. He would be sworn in that night. Basterrechea has served in the Meridian Police Department for 24 years, working his way up through the ranks during that time.
