Arbor Day today here though already celebrated last Sunday in Australia and New Zealand seems like the perfect time to talk about trees. That’s one thing we can probably always enjoy in common.
When I lived in Warren I had a normal-sized house on a normal-sized lot (except the lot dipped way down in back). Though being as intrigued with trees back then, I tried to count all those in my backyard (I don’t remember there being any out front). I confess I always gave up – simply too many (when one started with the tiniest ones). It’s truly amazing how many trees can grow happily in a very small space. My column on Singularity brought two recommendations of books I might like to read. Surprising myself, I happily succumbed to both suggestions.
Saving dessert for last, I turned first to “The Singularity is Near” by Ray Kurzweil. The author defines his term as “a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life will be irreversibly transformed.” “Although neither utopian nor dystopian,” the author continues, “this epoch will transform the concepts that we rely on to give meaning to our lives, from our business models to the cycle of human life, including death itself.” “We will be able to reengineer all the organs and systems in our biological bodies and brains to be vastly more capable.” ....

Even in this year of stress and duress, Christmastime seems to be the favored for families to re-meet, re-greet and, with a little bit of luck, enjoy each other’s company.
The enthusiastic welcomes were . . . well, welcome. The dirty clothes (is that the entire semester’s worth?) unloaded as well as a few gaily wrapped presents. The majority were to be purchased locally – now that there’s time right after connections remade with old friends also home for the vacation.
To quote someone else to speak our unspoken thought, “The next morning they were all gone again. Though Duane had been happy to see them, he was also relieved that they were gone. . . He loved his family, but even the brief time he had spent with them made him long for the simplicity of his solitude.” Thank you Larry McMurthy. ....
