PEABODY – Peabody’s Sunflower Theater was recently awarded a $9,200 grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission. The grant will partially cover the costs of muralist Stan Herd to create an art piece for the Sunflower Theater.
Over Memorial Day Weekend, the theater will have two opportunities for residents to tour the theater and see the improvements that have been made and the restoration work to be done.
The theater will be open to residents Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday from noon until 2 p.m. Marilyn Jones will be at the theater giving away sunflower seeds in honor of the theater and in recognition of 2021 as The Year of the Sunflower. Herd, the muralist working on the project, may also be available to chat with community members interested in the mural project. ....

This year, 2021, is the national year of the sunflower. That’s nice recognition, especially because the pretty, golden sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. In one rural community, this has served as inspiration for a beautification initiative. Coincidentally, this is also a year when that community is working to save its historic theater downtown. The building is named – what else? – the Sunflower Theatre.
Last week, we met Dr. Susan Mayo, who is part of the effort to save the historic Sunflower Theatre in downtown Peabody. Among the others joining in that effort is Marilyn Jones, who has also taken on a project of community beautification. ....

Sunflower theatre earns $10,000 grant to reimagine bowling alley to theatre once more for Peabody
PEABODY The Sunflower Theater has been undergoing renovations to help preserve the structural integrity of the building, as well as make it a functional performing arts space once again.
Susan Mayo, chairman of the Board of the Sunflower Theater Inc., announced the organization earned a $10,000 Reimagined Spaces Grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission to install a temporary floor in the theater to host a dance event.
Peabody Community Foundation Director Becky Nickel said, at the moment, the community foundation is a temporary funding mechanism for the theater, which is in the process of finalizing its 501c3 non-profit status. ....
