Campaigners launch their next move in fight against Keighley waste incinerator

CAMPAIGNERS fighting controversial plans to build a waste incinerator in Keighley have launched their next move.
Aire Valley Against Incineration (AVAI) – through its solicitors – is instructing counsel to write to the Environment Agency, challenging its decision to issue an operating permit for the proposed plant.
The agency announced in December that it had approved the permit for the incinerator, which is earmarked for the former gas works site at Marley.
Opponents of the plant say it would pose a risk to people’s health and damage the environment – claims that are refuted by the applicant Endless Energy.
AVAI chairman, Simon Shimbles, said: “Through our solicitors we have instructed counsel to draft what is known as a pre-action protocol letter to the Environment Agency, challenging it on the decision to issue an operating permit and questioning how it reached that decision.” ....

They said an Environment Agency decision to issue a permit for the plant was “very disappointing”.
But the campaign group, Aire Valley Against Incineration, says options are still available to fight the project – including a possible legal challenge.

Aire Valley Against Incineration chairman Simon Shimbles said that following the Environment Agency’s announcement, the group’s committee had met to “kick off” the next stage of opposition. ....

Protestors kick off the next stage of their campaign after incinerator permit is granted

CAMPAIGNERS are looking at ways to keep on fighting after an environmental permit was given to the Keighley incinerator which will be sited just four miles from Ilkley Moor.
Aire Valley Against Incineration committee members have met to discuss the next stage of their campaign after the permit was granted by the Environment Agency this week - and they stressed there were still options available.
AVAI chairman Simon Shimbles said “This represents the final green light for Endless Energy to operate the incinerator, should they eventually build it. However, there are still options available to oppose this.
He said committee members had met to kick off the next stage of the opposition campaign after the decision which had come out of the blue . ....
