Athens-Clarke County Commission backs concept for Classic Center Arena

Athens-Clarke commissioners on Tuesday approved a project concept for the Classic Center Arena, moving it a step closer to its final form.
County Manager Blaine Williams said during the meeting that a preliminary design for the facility could be available as early as August.
The new arena will be near the Classic Center and there are plans to connect the two. During a May 11 work session, the new facility was described as approximately 170,000 square feet
The project concept shows the arena would have 5,500 permanent seats and an additional 1,500 movable floor seats, with a total seating capacity of 7,000.
The concept includes a list of “must-haves” for the arena, including retractable seating, solar panels, an ice rink, exhibit space and a parking deck with a minimum of 300 spaces. ....

The Deal
Landmark Properties announced in 2019 that it would be breaking ground on its Phase II development of The Mark, a luxury student housing complex on Oconee Street just outside of downtown. The Phase II tower will include 160,000 square feet and 436 new beds, and it will be located directly behind the existing complex in the Pottery Town neighborhood along Wilkerson Street.  ....
