Gov. McKee places imprint on RI Ethics Commission with 3 appointments


PROVIDENCE  New Gov. Dan McKee has put his imprint on the Rhode Island Ethics Commission, by quietly appointing three of the nine members in one fell swoop last week.
After an extended period of time in which the commission that provides cautionary advice - and investigates alleged breaches of the state Ethics Code - sometimes had to struggle to get the minimum number of people together to make a decision, McKee appointed:
New Ethics Commission members: 
Well-known lawyer Lauren Jones who over the years has represented a wide array of public officials in ethics cases, and most recently, the House Speaker and majority leader during a legal tussle over control of the General Assembly hiring and spending arm known as the Joint Committee on Legislative Services. ....

RI House and Senate to open session in remote locations as COVID rages


PROVIDENCE  The 2021 Rhode Island legislative session opens Tuesday with COVID-19 still raging, vaccinations months away for much of the population and disruption still dominating almost every facet of life. 
In a sign of the times: Rhode Island s legislators will not start the new session in their ornate chambers, which got new paint, new rugs and new leather upholstery only a year ago and $166,000 worth of plexiglass partitions in mid-pandemic.
They will instead meet, take their socially distanced oaths of office, and elect their leaders at Veterans Memorial Auditorium (for the House) and Rhode Island College s Sapinsley Hall (for the Senate).  ....
