While taxes remain a volatile part of state budget negotiations, one top priority for progressive lawmakers an income tax break aimed at Connecticut’s working poor seems to have a reserved spot in the next two-year state budget.
And while full details about Connecticut Earned Income Tax Credit were unavailable late Thursday, social service advocates released new data showing most beneficiaries would be workers who kept vital services open during the coronavirus pandemic.
“These are the kind of people who worked three jobs during COVID,” said Rep. Sean Scanlon, D-Guilford, who co-chairs the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee. ....

Progressives intensify push to aid poor, middle class as General Assembly session winds down

A few weeks after the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police one year ago, progressive Democrats in Connecticut demanded massive new investments in poor Black and Latinx communities.
What they got was an overhaul of police accountability rules but almost no dollars. Neither the Black Lives Matter movement nor the ravages of the coronavirus pandemic were enough to overcome moderate Democrats’ and Republicans’ opposition to the tax hikes needed to sustain big spending increases in education, health care, housing and other core services.
But with this week’s anniversary of Floyd’s death, progressives find themselves embroiled in a far more intense battle for at least a down-payment on these investments. ....

Bridgeport state Sen. Dennis Bradley arrested on federal charges

Sen. Dennis A. Bradley Jr., D-Bridgeport, and his former campaign treasurer, Jessica Martinez, were accused in a federal indictment unsealed Tuesday of conspiring in 2018 to defraud Connecticut’s public campaign financing program of $179,850.
Informed of the indictment, Bradley surrendered to federal marshals and appeared in U.S. District Court to face conspiracy and wire fraud charges. Martinez, who was removed last year as the chair of the city’s Board of Education, also surrendered. In separate appearances, both pleaded not guilty.
The indictment was returned Monday by a grand jury and ordered unsealed in U.S. District Court in New Haven, where Bradley arrived in handcuffs. ....
